What if I Missed Open Enrollment? Can I Still Get Health Insurance?
If you missed Open Enrollment and still need insurance for 2020, then there are two things you need to know:
- You’re not alone.
- We can help.
You can enroll in a new plan or make changes to your current plan outside of Open Enrollment if you meet certain circumstances. Just make sure that you take action within 60 days of the qualifying life event, otherwise you may once again miss your chance and have to wait until Open Enrollment.

You recently lost or will soon lose your coverage. Examples include losing Medi-Cal coverage, losing your insurance through your job, changing jobs, or turning 26 and losing your parent’s insurance.
If you recently moved to California from another state, then you will be eligible to sign up. This might also apply if you moved within California, because you may qualify for different plans in different parts of the state.
If you recently got married or entered a domestic partnership, you and your spouse or partner will be eligible.
Had a Baby
If you just had a baby, adopted or began fostering a child, then your entire family can be eligible to enroll.
Returned from Active Duty Military Service
If you recently lost coverage after returning from active duty, reserve duty or the California National Guard, you can enroll in a new plan.
Released from Jail or Prison
If you recently were released from jail or prison, you will be eligible to enroll.
Gained Citizenship/Legal Residence
If you recently became a citizen, national, or permanent legal resident, you are eligible to enroll.
