Covered California (On-Exchange Plans)
Covered California is California’s version of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). California is one of the most successful states and the model of success under the ACA. Within Covered California, consumers can qualify for discounts (subsidies) off their monthly health insurance costs, based on their household taxable income. The Covered California market helps many residents get insurance that otherwise would not be able to afford standard coverage. These plans will be specifically for individuals and families that are self-employed with low taxable incomes, those who do not get benefits through their employment, or part time employees. In 2020, the income guidelines to qualify for these discounts will be expanded significantly to include financial help for individuals up to an income of $75,000, and for example, a family of four up to $154,000.

Off-Exchange (Plans Directly From The Insurance Company)
These plans are what most consumers would consider standard health insurance. These plans do fall under the umbrella of the Affordable Care Act, however there is no discount from the costs based on household income. These plans are for individuals and families that are self-employed, do not receive benefits from their employer, or do not qualify for subsidy through a Covered California plan. Being under the ACA umbrella makes these plans rich in benefits and compliant to the standard benefit design under the ACA plans: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
