Open Enrollment for the 2020 coverage year is upon us! Here’s everything you need to know.

#1 – For Most People, This is Your Only Chance to Sign Up or Change Your Coverage

Unless you experience a qualifying event throughout the year (change in employment, marital status, new baby, etc.), then Open Enrollment is your only chance to sign up for health insurance or switch to a new policy.

• We can help you renew your plan starting October 1, 2019
• We can help you get a new plan or change your plan starting October 15, 2019
• Open Enrollment closes January 15, 2020

#2 – State Mandate & Tax Penalty

California has passed a state mandate to purchase insurance. In other words, if you go without health insurance in 2020 you will have to pay a penalty on your taxes. That’s one reason to make sure you are covered next year. The other reason? Because all it takes is one injury, one major illness or condition, or one trip to the hospital and you could be on the hook for tens of thousands of dollars!

#3 – Income Guidelines Expanded for Covered California

Covered California has significantly altered the income guidelines to help more Californians qualify for subsidies (discounts) in 2020. These subsidies can drastically reduce monthly insurance premiums, helping many individuals and families who might otherwise not be able to afford health insurance. Below are two scenarios to illustrate how the income guidelines will be changing.

• A single individual with income below $74,940 annually in 2020 may qualify for assistance (up from $48,540 in 2019)
• A family of four with household income below $154,500 annually in 2020 may qualify for assistance (up from $100,400 in 2019)
